ASTTBC-PI wasestablished under the provisions of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (ASTT) Act, to represent the professionally certified house and property inspectors in British Columbia. ASTTBC-PI assists and supports consumers by providing ready access to the most highly qualified house and property inspectors in BC. ASTTBC-PI assumes the role of advocate for consumer in managing issues, providing continuing education ensuring professional development, combined with networking and social programs for ASTTBC-PI members.
ASTTBC-PI members are registered under provincial statute with the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC (ASTTBC), a self-governing professional association of 9,500+ technology professionals. Formed in 1958, ASTTBC's primary mandate is the certification of technology professionals in a manner that serves and protects the public interest.
Professional Credentials You Can Rely On When choosing a ASTTBC-PI member for your inspection, you access a qualified professional who is bound by the ASTTBC Code of Ethics, must follow high standards of practice and will be held professionally accountable for their inspection services. While seldom an issue, inspectors carry errors and omissions insurance to protect the consumer if something goes wrong.
Certified inspectors are identified by one of two designations:
CPI or CHI
Inspectors working towards full certification (CHI or CPI) are classified as either a Provisional Certified House Inspector CHI(P) or an Inspector-in-Training depending on their level of education and training. The ability and competence of CPIs and CHIs is maintained through continuing education facilitated by ASTTBC-PI; this is to ensure inspectors remain current with the latest changes in the building industry and the on-going performance issues of residential and commercial buildings in BC. As professional liability issues are of great concern for both the house and property inspectors and to their clients, ASTTBC-PI inspectors carry errors and omissions insurance.
CHI and CPI professionals must pass a rigorous supervised mentor training and assessment program before receiving authority to offer inspection services for a fee to the public at large. Other organizations have recently joined ASTTBC in requiring inspectors to complete supervised inspections PRIOR to performing inspections for the public. ASTTBC applauds and recognizes the efforts of other organizations to meet ASTTBC’s standards for professional certification. At present in BC there is not one minimum standard for professional certification and regulation. Consumers are encouraged to compare the standards of all groups offering certification to make sure they meet ASTTBC’s high standard for professional certification and regulation.
